What is a knee MRI?
Knee Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an imaging technique that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to capture detailed images of structures within the knee point and surrounding areas of knee. MRI of the knee gives images of knee joint, bones, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, muscles and blood vessels. Knee MRI is prescribed by the doctors to find out the cause of pain and inflammation in the knees. MRI of the knee also helps to find other disorders in knees like arthritis, bone tumors, infections, damages and many other problems.
Knee Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non invasive procedure. Depending on the results of knee MRI, a doctor may a recommend special MRI arthrogram for better results. MRI arthrogram is an invasive procedure. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) produces digital images which can be stored in a computer and can be transferred easily for future use or for second opinions. There are two types of MRI, they are Standard MRI and Open MRI machine. Magnetic resonance imaging for torn meniscus, meniscus injury, meniscus tear and others is very useful.
Risks of a Knee MRI
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan uses strong magnetic radio waves to take the images instead of radiation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is considered as safe procedure when compared to other imaging techniques like CT scan and X-Ray’s. Few risks are associated with MRI of the knee or MRI are
People with metal implants cannot undergo MRI as it uses strong magnetic fields which make metallic objects to pull towards magnet and hence metallic implants shift inside the body.
If individuals have metallic parts in the eyes, MRI can damage retina.
In few cases sedation is used, excess dose can lead to some complications.
How a Knee MRI is performed?
Before the imaging procedure, individuals are asked to remove all the metallic objects on the body like jewellery, watches, bangles and valets if any. Individuals should wear a hospital gown which does not have any zippers or snaps. You are asked to lie on a table and stays still without any movements, Straps and bolsters may be used to help you stay still during the procedure. In few cases a contrast is given to get clear image. Depending on the type of MRI, the procedure may take 10 to 45 minutes and may also take longer in few tests. Individuals may not have any feeling during the process but may have loud sounds, to avoid this the faculty may provide you earplugs. Small devices like coils may be placed around your knees to get clear and detailed images.
